FEATURE
FILM ON PREMIER VOCAL GROUP
TO BE SHOT IN WORCESTER THIS NOVEMBER
[Worcester,
Mass., October 12, 2003] — The Bobs, a vocal quartet
known as "The Beatles of the a cappella world",
will be the subject of a concert documentary entitled
The Bobs Remain The Same, which will
be shot this November at Worcester's famed Mechanics
Hall.
The Bobs, formed in 1981, have brought their infectious
harmonies and delicious wit to nearly every part of
the English-speaking world. While the Grammy-nominated
group first became known for their unique covers of
classics like Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze"
and The Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer",
they have earned just as much acclaim with their originals,
like "Kill Your Television", "Leisure
Suit" and the recent, show-stopping signature
piece, "A Cappella Choir In The Sky".
The film will shoot largely on November 9, 2003, at
the Mechanics Hall show, though producer/director
Robert Newton and a guerilla film crew will shadow
the four Bobs during the week leading up to the show.
The title of the film is an allusion to the 1976 concert
documentary The Song Remains The Same (on
Newton's favorite non-a cappella band, Led Zeppelin.)
The film will make the festival circuit in 2004, followed
by a high-profile DVD release.
"I had seen The Bobs in concert about a half
dozen times," notes Newton, "and I was tired
of thinking quietly to myself, 'Someone should make
a film about these guys.' So we pitched the group
on how I would go about conveying the many joys of
The Bobs on film, and before I knew it, we had a green
light."
Newton, 34, a film critic and video store owner from
Worcester, released a novelty record, Monkey Bismuth,
in 2001, and is in production of another film, the
fictional documentary, Remaking History.
"It's going to be a good night," Newton
adds, "not only for me, personally, but for other
music fans and, most importantly, for Worcester."
Longtime Bobs friend, the award-winning blues pianist
Bob Malone, will also help make the show unique. He
will team up with The Bobs to deliver "Rhapsody
In Bob", their never-before-performed version
of George Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue".
"We will be following the original arrangement
somewhat closely," Malone notes, "but will
be putting our own stamp on it." The Bobs, who
have recorded 11 albums of covers and original material,
will perform the orchestra parts in four-part a cappella
harmony, with Malone "doing my best to bring
out much more of the 'Blue' than has been heard before,"
adding, "Gonna add a little grease to that classical
thang..."
